Live Lobsters can be held in loose or crated tank settings. Loose tank settings allow the lobster to roam freely around the tank. Crated tank settings float groups of lobster in cool circulating water. The crates can be divided into individual sleeves to reduce stress. Display tanks in restaurants and commercial stores are made of acrylic or glass. These tanks are expensive and intended to allow the end buyer to view the lobster before purchase. Display tanks are usually loose tanks with dividing glass partitions available. Lobster are cannibalistic in nature, so larger lobsters will need to be separated from their smaller tank mates.

Wholesalers and aquaculture farms that use very large holding tanks use different types of materials. These tanks start out as wooden, concrete, or brick enclosures. Then they are lined with fiberglass and epoxy resins to make them watertight and create rounded corners and edges. Rounding the corners and seams of the tank interior allows the water to circulate smoothly around the tank. When the tanks are drained they are much easier to clean and do not harbor bacteria. The more popular option is to purchase a solid fiberglass tank. They are light, durable, and can be moved if necessary. They can also be formed into any shape and size requirement.

tank-construction-03Tanks should be filled and drained every 24 hours for two weeks prior to lobster introduction.

(The resins used in liners and fiberglass tanks leach styrene which is highly toxic to lobsters.) When creating the plumbing for the water system only PVC, food grade vinyl, and stainless steel piping materials should be used.
